Things to be aware of

Algiers is an Islamic region so be aware of the customs and traditions and respect them. Be conservative in dress especially when visiting religious places of worship. Avoid visiting Algiers in the summer as it can be terribly hot and dusty. The best time to visit is in spring or late autumn. Most of the places have a water shortage and consistently lack running water. Therefore, to avoid illness, do not drink water unless it has been boiled and check the hygiene of the restaurant before eating out as most places are not hygienically maintained. Knowledge of the French or Arabic language would be useful, as not everybody understands English. Take the same precautions that you would in any large city for your safety. Register with the embassy after entering the country. Dress appropriately and avoid an unnecessary display of wealth. Travel in groups and avoid travelling in lonely areas especially at night.
