Algeria hosts several events that have religious, cultural and political themes. The nation celebrates Independence Day on 5 July every year, which is preceded by Revolution Day on 19 June, commemorating the organised attacks by the National Liberation Front prior to independence. On 1 November, Algeria celebrates the anniversary of its freedom struggle.
Apart from these politically based holidays, certain other holidays during the year. These may occur on different days, depending on the Islamic calendar. All Islamic festivals are held according to the phases of the moon. During Ramadan, which extends for around one month and culminates with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, a majority of shops, restaurants and business remain open; however, in certain orthodox areas, life may come to a standstill.
