Algerian cuisine is a blend of Berber, Arab, Turkish and French cuisines. The stews and vegetable dishes originate from the Berbers, while the pastries and spices can be traced to the Turks. Aperitifs and sweets are distinctly French; most of the main courses have a Mediterranean flavour. Couscous, a steamed preparation, is Algeria’s national dish.
While extremely strong coffee is popular in Algeria, tea with a hint of mint is the popular drink among locals.
