Ghardaia is an oasis town in northern Algeria. It is one of the main towns of the conservative Mzab Valley region and is home to about 111,000 people.
In summer, temperatures exceed 40C, with high humidity. The winters, from October-April, are pleasant with temperatures dropping at night.
Ghardaia was founded in the 11th century. Today it a centre of date production and is known for its exquisite rugs and cloth.
Most of the inhabitants belong to the conservative Ibadi sect of Islam and trace their lineage to the Mozabite group of Algerian Berbers.
