The oasis of Taghit is full of green fields and palm trees, but behind the town huge 150m high sand dunes rise and fall, forming the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. These endless, shifting sands of the sand sea are a sight to behold.
The local village is a labyrinth of narrow lanes and mud-brick homes, set between green palm groves. The village is dominated by an imposing old Ksar which today serves as a military post, and is not open to the public.
Visit the Taghit Natural Reserve. It houses some exotic desert flora and fauna as well as being a protective environment for endangered desert wildlife.
Explore the prehistoric drawings and rock etchings that can be found around the region.
The most common activity at Taghit however is related to the Sahara. Choose between a desert safari, camel expeditions and a desert sunset. Ski over the sand dunes or drive over and against them. Another exciting option is to camp in the desert or visit a local Berber village.
