Tamanrasset is a desert town in southern Algeria. Located near the Ahagaar Mountains, it is today a crucial stopover for desert lovers.
Tamanrasset enjoys pleasant weather all year round due to low humidity. June is the warmest month with temperatures of 22-35C and January is the coolest with temperatures of 5-21C. It receives very little rainfall.
Traditionally this oasis town stood at the crossroads of the Saharan trade route. Today, too, it is the centre of all commercial activity in southern Algeria.
It hosts a population of 76,000 inhabitants, mostly of Tuareg origin. The Tuareg are a nomadic people; they have lived and wandered the deserts for generations. In fact Tamanrasset is the largest Tuareg city in the world. Today, the locals double up as tour guides and can be spotted easily in their stunning blue robes.
