Timimoun is an oasis town in Algeria. Situated in the middle of the Gourrara region, it opens up to the Grand Erg Occidental and the splendid sand dunes that form it.
A desert town, the weather here is fairly harsh with scorching temperatures in the daytime that drop fairly low after sundown.
Traditionally a trading town for caravans, the town saw trade in gold, cotton, ivory, cereals and spices. Today Timimoun’s economy is based on tourism and agriculture.
It has a population of about 40,000 inhabitants and is one of Algeria’s most diverse towns. The residents are descendants of the Haratine, Zénète Berbers, Cha'amba Arabs and native Africans.
