Timimoun: Attractions and more...
Timimoun is divided into the old quarter and the new section. The old town, called Ksour, is dotted with little red mud homes, an unusual and beautiful example of Sudanese architecture. You’ll also find the Sid Moussa Mosque, Sudan’s door and the Mosque tower here. On a typical day, the narrow town streets are shielded from the sun with long, flowing cloth hanging overhead.
In the new section of town is the Oasis Rouge. Built as a hostel by the French, it is now a cultural center.
The Gourara hotel is a stunning example of architecture. On one side, it overlooks the salt lake and the palm grove and on the other, you can watch the shifting sand dunes.
Desert Excursions into the Grand Erg Occidental are common and can be conducted on foot or in a four-wheeler.
