Tlemcen is situated in north-western Algeria. With a population of about 180,000 inhabitants, it is a centre for tourism in the country.
Located in the mountains, Tlemcen avoids the high humidity of the Mediterranean coast and yet it is close enough to the coast to enjoy the pleasant sea breeze in summer.
Tlemcen flourished as the capital of the Berber dynasty between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its rich past has given the city a unique blend of Berber, Arab and French culture.
Today, apart from its music and art, the city is known for its olive plantations. Olives, along with the leather, carpet, and textile industries, form the economic base of the city.
The people of Tlemcen are mainly of Berber and Arab origins.
