Benguela, a coastal city in Angola, is the capital of Benguela Province. It is Angola’s second most important city with a population of over 600,000 inhabitants. Also known as the cultural capital of Angola, Benguela has a small-town ambience with a bustling city life.
Benguela has a tropical climate which varies largely, owing to the altitude. The warmest months are September and October; the coolest, July and August. Rains extend from November to April.
Benguela was founded in 1617 by the Portuguese and was a major trade centre with agriculture and animal husbandry being the main occupations. Today, its economy includes construction, oil, textiles, wines and much more.
