Tourist Guide Porto novo
The capital of the Republic of Benin is situated 13 kilometres away from the
Atlantic Ocean and about nearly 30 from the city of Cotonou, the economic capital
of the country.
Porto Novo’s population is about 230.000 inhabitants.
The first name of the town was "Hôgbonou", and it was given
by the prince Adja Tê-Agbanlin, the founder of the realm. It was the Portuguese
Eucharistus de Campos around 1730 who called the city Porto Nuevo, because it
reminded him the Portuguese city of Porto.
