Cameroon was a German protectorate until the end of World War I when it was divided between the British and the French. The French territory was set up as an autonomous state in 1957, and in 1959, the government of Cameroon was formed under Ahmadou Ahidjo. It became an independent republic on 1 January 1960. The then government and the following one were both authoritarian.
Music and dance are an integral part of Cameroonian culture. It can be found in their ceremonies, festivals and social gatherings. Traditional dances are performed by men and women separately. Traditional artefacts like decorated pots, drinking horns, beadwork, dishes and trays are popular among tourists.
Situated on the west coast of Africa, Cameroon is bordered by the gulf of Guinea, Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. It is geologically diverse with rainforests and volcanic peaks to the northwest of the country, savannah and deserts in the north and centre, and a low coastal plain with equatorial rain forests in the south. The highest point is Mount Cameroon in the southwest.
