Cidade Velha—the Old City—is the first European settlement in the Tropics, earning it the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins of the city provide a gateway to the bygone era. The Fortaleza Real de São Filipe, located on a prominent cliff in Sao Filipe, is reminiscent of the Portuguese colonial past and the Atlantic trade.
Serving as the cultural hub of the nation is Mindelo. Surrounded by barren mountains on a moon-shaped port, Mindelo boasts of cobblestone streets and candy-coloured colonial buildings.
Mount Fogo, the highest point in Cape Verde, is an active volcano; its slopes are covered with cinders. It provides for an adventurous trek up its slope, and rewards the visitor with an amazing view. One of the most striking structures of the country is the Palácio de Presidente, home to the governing council of Sao Vicente. Its ornate, pink facade is very attractive, drawing its inspiration from Indian architecture.
