Each island of Cape Verde hosts several festivals throughout the year. The nation as a whole celebrates several traditional festivals. The Carnival, celebrated all over, especially in Sao Vicente and Sao Nicolau, is held in February or March, on the occasion of Ash Wednesday. April brings in the festival of Bandeira de Sao Filipe, celebrated on the island of Fogo.
The islands of Brava, Santo, Antao and Sao Nicolau celebrate the traditional festivals of St John and St Anthony with much zest, held during May and June. June also includes the tabanka, the feast preceding St John’s Day, hosted in Santiago and Maio.
The liveliest time in the country is during the music festival of Baia das Gatas, on the island of Sao Vicente. The celebrations held over the weekend include music, dancing and eating, attracting visitors from all over.
