Sao Tiago is the largest of the Cape Verde islands. Home to 101,000 people, this was the first island in the archipelago to be inhabited.
The islands enjoys dry, moderate climate throughout the year with short bursts of rainfall between August and October.
Discovered by the Portuguese in 1456, the island was a thriving centre for slave trade. Today agriculture and tourism are its two main industries.
More than two-thirds of its population is Creole (mixed origin); the remainder being European and native African. Its residents have a predominantly African culture, which is reflected in the musical traditions, markets and festivities.
