Praia is the capital of Sao Tiago. It is a pleasant city with quaint botanical gardens and a bustling African market. You’ll find the very popular Hotel Praia Mar and its small beach here. Other beaches worth visiting include the Quebra Canela.
The city houses the National Maritime Museum. This marine archaeology museum has a fascinating record of the various shipwrecks that have occurred around the islands.
Cidade Velha, the first capital of the Cape Verde islands, was a major slave trading post and signs of its past include the imposing Portuguese fortress of S.Filipe.
The Gamboa Festival in May sees a Musical parade in the Cidade da Praia. This is followed by the festive months of June and July, when celebrations of the Popular Saints take place. People from all over the country meet in the capital to participate in colourful processions.
The local diet is chiefly seafood. Also try the Cachupa, a local delicacy.
