Sao Vicente is one of the Barlavento islands of the Cape Verde. Discovered in 1462, it is home to around 70,000 people.
It has a tropical climate with the temperature around 24ºC all year round; November-July is dry and windy, while rainfall is experienced in August-October.
Its economy once depended on Slave Trade; today it is fueled by the tourism industry along with fishing and some agriculture. It is also a military base.
A majority of the population is Creole (mixed origin); the remainder being native African and European.
