Mindelo, the capital city, is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains. The cultural centre of the region, it has a busy market and a craft centre—The Centro Nacional Artesanato—that promotes local craftsmen and artisans.

With several mountain ranges, including the Monte Verde, Monte Cara and Topona it is perfect for hiking, horseback riding and cycling.

The Baia das Gatas and Sao Pedro beaches are known for their long, sandy stretches and windsurfing facilities.

The music festival at Baia Das Gatas takes place in August. In addition, Mindelo celebrates a Brazilian-style carnival every year.

In September, the theater festival takes place with International Amateur Theatre Groups meeting there.

The Satumo Bar and Restaurant is very popular. Try the local specialty, Cachupa, or the Arroz de cabidela de marisco à dadal, a special shellfish dish made with rice and Guisado de percebes or grilled lobster.
