Mayotte is an overseas community of France, but geographically, it is part of the Comoro Islands, where it is known as Mahoré.
It has a tropical climate. The Monsoons, between November-May, are hot and humid. The dry season between May-November is much cooler, and a good time to visit the island.
The island depends primarily on the agricultural sector, including fishing and livestock-raising.
It is home to an estimated 201,234 people, most of whom are of are of Malagasy origin.
