Mayotte’s towns are unique; they comprise wattle-and-daub or tressed coconut-frond huts, and are an example of Malagasy architecture. A walk along the streets is quite an experience.
The main island is volcanic in origin, with a mountainous terrain and a rocky coastline, making this a spectacular hiking destination. A climb up to the mount Choungui offers a spectacular panorama of the island
Mayotte is almost entirely surrounded by a coral reef and so diving is a must. This is the world’s largest lagoon and you can experience the most unique marine life here. If you visit the island in August/September, you’ll even sight a humpback whale or two in the lagoon.
The southern coastline of the island plays host to sea turtles, who come to roost on the island. These giant creatures are a sight not to be missed.
