Tadjoura, in Djibouti, is one of the oldest towns in East Africa. Lying on the Gulf of Tadjoura, it is home to a population of around 25,000 people.
Tadjoura experiences hot and dry weather conditions throughout the year, with June-September being the harshest months. Day time temperatures touch 38 C with very high humidity. July sees the hot Khamsin winds sweeping across the towns. The best time to visit is October-April.
In the olden days, Tadjoura was the seat of the Afar Ad-Ali abli Sultanate. It was also one of the main ports in the region and a centre for trade to Abyssinia (Ethopia).
Today the population of Somali (or Issa) and Ethiopian (or Afar) origins earn their living in the salt mines and the local fishing industry.
