The Valley of the Mummies, discovered only in 1999, contains more than hundred mummies believed to be almost 2,000 years old. Some are wrapped in porcelain or canvas and others are adorned with thin gold masks giving them an eerie lifelike appearance. Near this site is the Temple of Alexander the Great, one of the largest in the country. Scenes depicting Alexander carved into walls and ancient artefacts have been excavated here.
El Bawiti is the main village of the oasis. The Temple of Ain el-Muftella made up of four chapels with their etched and painted walls, Gebel al-Ingleez, a fortification built on a hill during World War I, and the 3,000-year-old Tomb of Amenhotep Huy are the main attractions.
The village of El Haiz reflects the Roman area in Egypt with the remains of the Roman Fortress and the Roman Palace found here; an interesting site is the ruins of an ancient Wine Factory.
