Saqqara is the location of the cemetery's main city of Memphis, on the western bank of the Nile, about thirty kilometers from Cairo and 17 in the city of Giza. The importance of the necropolis is the remains of a funerary complex, built by the pharaohs of the Old Empire and the many tombs of nobles as a place devoted to the god Sokar, was chosen by the pharaohs of the Old Empire to establish its necropolis, and was looted from ancient times.
