The Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo, Egypt, is worth visiting for its extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities.  Founded in 1858 by French archeologist Auguste Mariette , the giant pink building was built in 1902. Housing one of the world's greatest collections of Egyptian artifacts, it boasts more than 136,000 artifacts from every period of pre-Islamic Egyptian history, featuring the famous Tutankhamun collection with its beautiful gold death mask and sarcophagus and the royal Mummy room, which feature an additional eleven Pharaonic dignitaries.

It would be impossible to see everything in one, so plan several trips to see each exhibit separately. The exhibits on the ground floor are arranged chronologically running clockwise.

Don't miss the Amarna collection tucked away at the back.

Upstairs are artifacts from the Tomb of Tutankhamun, the museum's most famous collection.

Also on the top floor is the Mummy Room, which reopened in 1994 after years of controversy and contains the mummies of Egypt's mightiest Pharaohs.
