Don't be put off visiting Egypt's National Military Museum by the thought of boring displays of weapons and historical uniforms.

Housed in the former Harem Palace of Mohammed Ali, the founder of modern Egypt, the National Military Museum is located within the Cairo Citadel, a walled complex of fortifications and various types of buildings which sits on bluff overlooking Cairo.

The view alone is worth the trip!

A statue of one of Egypt's historic military heroes, Ibrahim Pasha, is on display as you enter the museum.

Better known as the son of Mohammed Ali of Egypt, Ibrahim Pasha began to command the Egyptian forces when he was a teenager and later become known as the Wali or Governor of Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Hejaz, Morea, Thasos and Crete.

Seen as being among the best managed exhibitions in the country, the museum's ornate interior is filled with displays chronicling Egyptian history from the ancient era of the Pharaohs through the Middle Ages and Islamic conquests.

The museum features an impressive collection of arms, armor, uniforms, maps and models through the ages, while the exterior section of the museum is flanked in modern weaponry used in Egypt's recent Middle East conflicts.

Galleries are devoted to various branches of the armed forces, the structure of the army in each historical era and a large section of the museum is devoted to Egypt's early victories against Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
