The cities mosques are a good place to begin any itinerary. Imam Husayn Mosque, Mosque-Mausoleum Zaynab and Sayyidah Ruqayya Mashhad are only three great examples from the old city.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, is home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world. This is really the best portal to ancient Egyptian history in Cairo, with 27 royal mummies from Pharaonic times. Today there are 9 on display including the internationally famous newly discovered mummy of Queen Hatshepsut.
