Deir el-Hagar, located on the extreme west of the oasis, is a temple devoted to ancient Egyptian deities including the God of the oasis; it was later converted to a monastery. The village of Al Qasr is one of the larger settlements and its Old Town is still in a condition good enough to portray the lives in ancient times. The Muzawaka Tombs from the Roman times have been discovered on a plateau a little outside Al Qasr.

Moving east, the village of Budkhulu is one of the smaller villages and houses a mosque from the Middle Ages; Fish Pond, a man-made lake, is popular with bird watchers. Mut is the largest settlement of oasis, not much of the old town remains but the more modern hotels and restaurants are a change from the otherwise rustic region.

Bashendi village is characterised by the mud houses painted in different colours; a sanctuary and a temple called the Tomb of Kitnes are worth a visit. The village is known for woven carpets, baskets and clothes.
