One of the main attractions in the region is the ‘White Desert’. It is a white landscape strewn with large rock formations rising out of the ground; these rocks are of different shapes and sizes. Ain Hadra is a spring in the White Desert which is uninhabited but still contains the remains of the Roman reign in forms of some ruins and pieces of pottery.
The house of a local artisan, Badr, serves as a gallery for his creations; the garden around the house contains the larger sculptures. A trip to Farafra is incomplete without a swim in one of the many hot sulphur springs like Bir Setta and El Mufid Lake. Olives and olive oil sold here are considered to be of very good quality. The ruins of Roman houses at Al Minqar paint a good picture of lives in those times.
A recent discovery has been the Hidden Valley a little away from Farafra; excavations have revealed that a 10,000-year-old village might have existed here.
