The main town of Kharga does not have many historic sites; the lush gardens in the outskirts of the city are worth a visit. The Temple of Hibis is one of the largest and best examples of Persian architecture in the country; the carvings on the walls have been well preserved. Another site of note is the massive temple of Qasr el Ghweita which stands on a round hilltop surrounded by fortified villages.
Ed Deir is one of the many fortresses in the oasis consisting of many towers joint by galleries; some of the graffiti on its walls is many centuries old. The fortresses of Ain Umm Dabadib and Qasr el Labeka are deep into the desert and are accessed by crossing several hills of sand dunes.
The Necropolis of Bagawat is a burial site with as many as 263 mud-brick chapels, many of which house tombs. The southernmost site of the oasis is the fortress of Qasr el Zayan, most of which lies in ruins except for the temple.
