Suez Canal is a huge man made canal which runs between Suez on the Red Sea and Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea.
This canal facilitates water transportation to and from Europe to Asia without having to stop in Africa.
The canal is hundred and sixty three kilometres in length and the narrowest part of the canal is sixty meters wide. It offers the fastest crossing from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and is widely used by several modern ships.
The taxes received by the Egyptian government from the paying vessels which use this canal form a major part of its income.
The canal runs through three lakes including the Bitter Lake, the Timsah Lake and the Manzala Lake. The Bitter Lake forms almost thirty kilometres of the total length of the canal.
