Gambia : Attractions

The city of Banjul lies on an island at the mouth of the Gambia River. Albert Market is a vibrant and colourful market where visitors can experience the smells and sounds of Africa. The War Memorial and the Fountain, in MacCarthy Square, are the popular landmarks of the city. Some of the best beaches in Africa lie to the south of the city.

Nature lovers must visit the Abuko Nature Reserve and the Kiang West National Park; both are rich in wildlife and natural beauty. The Gambia River is a paradise for birds and bird-lovers.

The strategically located Fort Bullen at Barra Point and the Oyster Creek are easily accessible from Banjul. Albreda and Juffure are historically significant spots. Burial spots older than 1,200 years can be found around Wassau, also known for their circular standing stones.

Tendaba is a popular tourist spot, while the colonial city of Georgetown serves as an administrative and trading centre for the region.
