The main attraction of the city is the ancient Cape Coast Castle, one of the biggest slave castles in Ghana. Today the castle has been converted into the country’s best museum. Also near by is the Portuguese built Elmina Slave Castle.
Also worth a visit are the Fort William, built in 1820, an active lighthouse till the 1970s, and the Fort Victoria, which was built in 1702.
For a glimpse of the local culture, visit the Cape Coast Centre for National Culture. Every July the centre hosts the Biennial Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival (PANAFEST), which brings Africans both local and in the diaspora together.
In September the city hosts the annual Oguaa Fetu Afahye Harvest Festival. This week long celebration is in honour of the Fetu spirits, and precedes the harvest season.
Explore the Kakum National Park, a preserve for protected and endangered animals. When here, don’t miss out on the park’s famous Canopy Walk.
