The city experiences a tropical climate. It has two rainy seasons: April-June and September-October. The average annual temperature is 26C with high humidity.
Originally known as Oguaa, it was founded by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Cape Coast grew around the Cape Coast Slave Castle, now a World Heritage Site.
The manufacturing sector and small scale industries form the backbone of the local economy. The population is mainly of Fetu origins.
