Bissau, estimated population 250.000 inhabitants, is Guinea-Bissau’s
capital.
The city is located on the Geba River estuary, off the Atlantic Ocean.
Thanks to its privileged position, Bissau has very good transportation facilities
through canals.
Bissau is at the same time the country's largest city, major port, and administrative
and military centre.
The city was founded in 1687 by the Portuguese as a fortified port and a trading
place.
There is in Bissau an international airport, the Osvaldo Vieiro International
Airport.
The city also houses a research institute and a university!
