Traditionally Kenyan cuisine has been designed to fill stomachs, and has kept away from the flare of some other cuisines. A typical meal includes meat stews, sauce and beans served with rice, potatoes or a thick powdered-maize porridge. The national dish is called Nyama Choma—barbequed goat meat. Meals are generally washed down with the local beer.

For more innovative cuisine options, head to the coast, where the meals display strong Arab and Indian influences.
