The Old Town is perched atop a hill; the most distinct building is the Mosque, more for its impressive structure than anything else. The mosque is surrounded by a maze of smaller buildings which served as houses etc.
A circular route starting at Ghat takes you through the lofty Acacus Mountains. It is one of the least explored places in the world and can only be accessed with certified guides or excursion tours. The caves in the mountains are known for their beautiful cave paintings, carvings etc.
A little away from the city of Ghat is the Jebel Acacus a landscape covered with black asphalt rock formations of different shapes and sizes rising from the land.
An Annual Ghat Festival is held here from 29 to 31 December. The festival culminates with the ushering in of the New Year with song and dance performances of the traditional Taureg style.
