Sussa: Attractions and more...
Sussa is regarded as a walk into the past for many tourists who enter its dominion. Important monuments include the Main Street, the thermal baths, the sixth-century governor’s residence and the various Byzantine structures. The acropolis is the fortified part of the town protected by ancient walls which have been preserved to this date.
Important churches here are the Extra-Mural Church, the Western Church (built against the city walls), and the fifth-century Eastern Church (containing some excellent green marble columns).
There is a small museum in the centre of town which showcases a small collection of Byzantine mosaics and sculptures. The collection is set to expand as the excavations get underway. Most of Sussa’s attractions are found underwater and can be seen by getting hold of a local boat. Diving enthusiasts will find it a welcome opportunity to explore the waters on their own.
