Benghazi is in north-eastern Libya.Located on the Gulf of Sidra Benghazi, it is the second largest city in the country and has a population of 950,000 inhabitants.
Benghazi has a Mediterranean climate with moderate wet winters and warm dry summers.
Benghazi was founded around 6th century BC by the Ancient Greeks and named Euesperides. The city's present name is derived from that of a pious benefactor—Ghazi; Bani Ghazi means Ghazi's descendants.
The city suffered severe damage during World War II, today it serves as a major economic centre with emphasis on the manufactured goods and finance sector. The city has a multiethnic population, with a majority of people of Arab decent.
