Ghadhames encompasses all the features of a traditional desert place, including the conventional architecture. It has befittingly conferred the title of ‘Pearl of the Desert’.
The old Ghadhames is an intriguing place and is best explored on foot. It is replete with intertwined mazes and alleyways, and the overhead skylights and open squares, which are unique to this region, add to the Old World charm of the place. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dan Magrumah House is the former abode of an old merchant, with the original furnishings and decorations still preserved. Sedija Square is surrounded by brilliant mud-brick structures.
Ras al- Ghoul (Haunted Hill) has ruins from the Roman Era and constitutes an integral part of the local folklore. It provides splendid panoramas overlooking the desert, and the nearby lake makes for an ideal picnic spot.
