Shahat has many interesting archaeological monuments which stand as proof of its ancient influences. The main landmarks include the Greek Bathhouses, the Greek market, the Hellenic Theatre and the Acropolis Fort along with the impressive Agora area. Important temples include the Temple of Zeus, Bakhos Temple and the Temple of Apollo (constructed in the seventh century BC) among others. Do take notice of the graves sculptured onto rocks in pure Greek style.
The Roman era left behind structures like the Hargal Gallery, the Roman bathhouses and theatre and various statues and temples dating back to the early centuries. The city’s northern wall was rebuilt by the Romans around that period. The Byzantine-styled churches are perfect for a photograph.
Shahat also has an archaeological museum showcasing the various discoveries and artefacts of the region. The necropolis between Cyrene and Apollonia is well worth a visit.
