Antananarivo, formerly Tananarive, is Madagascar’s capital and largest
city.
It is located in the east-central part of the country and is built on two ridges
that form a V with the Avenue de l'Independance running through the central
valley. .
Antananarivo is the country’s administrative, communication, and economic
centre.
It is the trade centre for a productive agricultural region, whose main crop
is rice.
The city was founded in the 17th century as a walled citadel. The conquests of
the Merina king Radama I, who reigned from1810 to1828, made Antananarivo the
capital of almost all Madagascar.
Today the city has unusual French and Asian inspired architecture and winding
cobblestone streets and staircases that create a wonderful impression.
