Tourist Guide Mahajanga
The city of Mahajanga is an important seaport and the capital of the Boeny region, located in north-western Madagascar, Africa. The city is situated at the mouth of the Betsiboka River which leads to the Bombetoka Bay.
Mahajanga enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 33°C. March to September, the driest months, are the best time to visit.
The city was founded by the Arabs in the eighteenth century and was formerly known as Majunga. It witnessed ethnic unrest in 1977, leading to the eviction of the Comorian minority living there. Today, the city has a predominantly Muslim population.
It is well connected by air and road. With a population of around 200,000 inhabitants, the local economy is largely sustained through the export of a large variety of consumer goods such as sugar, spices and cement.
