Lilongwe has an old town and a new, modern quarter. While the New Town is full of commercial structures, the Old Town is built around the former village of Lilongwe and has a lovely old world charm to it.
The Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, in the centre of the city, is a rich natural reserve. Along with wildlife, you’ll also find rare wildflowers and exotic plants. It also serves as an environmental education centre.
Capital hill is the seat of power. Full of important government buildings and institutions, it is set amid wooded slopes of indigenous trees and is surrounded with restaurants, shops and cinema theatres.
Catch the bustling African market on Malangalanga Rd, and head to the old Indian spice and cloth shops that make the city.
The most exciting stop at Lilongwe is the Tobacco Auction Floor. Watch the buyers and sellers in action at the public gallery of the auction house.
