Zomba is located in the Zomba district in the southern region of Malawi. It is the administrative capital of the Zomba district and has a population of approximately 1,00,000 inhabitants.
Zomba is typified by a subtropical climate, with distinctive seasons. The wet season extends from November to April; May to August witnesses the cool, dry winter season. The hot, dry season extends from September to October.
Zomba was the first settlement of the colonial administration. This is reflected in the architecture of its older buildings and structures. It had a rather diverse cultural mix that included Dutch, German and American envoys, along with the British tobacco farmers.
The local economy of Zomba consists mainly of industry and services. The industrial establishment is limited to timber, carpentry and brick-making.
