Zomba is best known for its strategic location at the base of the Zomba Plateau. A huge block of mountain rising up to 1800 m, it is covered with a vast expanse of thick vegetation. Streams, cascading waterfalls and placid lakes characterise the top of the plateau, which also provides a splendid view of the beautiful city. The plateau abounds in exotic flora and fauna. Some of the plants found here cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. The hike to the top of the plateau is the most popular tourist activity.
The other places of interest in Zomba include the clock tower, which serves as a World War I memorial, and the Cobbe Barracks, which still contains the King’s African rifles. There is also a beautiful botanical garden and a golf course, aptly situated on the lush slopes of the plateau.
Sunbird Ku Chawe, a luxury hotel, provides accommodation atop the plateau. There is also a large camp-site as well as provisions for fishing and horse riding.
