The unique mosque in the city of Djenne is a landmark of the city. The Old city of Djenne is one of the oldest cities in Africa and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of Mopti is the centre of the country’s tourist industry. With a beautiful mosque and an eclectic town centre, Marché des Souvenirs, the port city is worthy of a visit. Timbuktu is renowned for its mosques and fourteenth-century tombs.
A good area for trekking is the Bandiagara escarpment in the Dogon country, with Bandiagara, Bankass and Mopti being the main starting points for trekking trips.
The city of Gao houses the mosque of Kankan Moussa and the tombs of the Askia Dynasty. La Boucle de Baoule National Park has some special species of wildlife that add to the beauty of the region.
