Djenne is famous for its mud brickarchitecture. An example of this is the old town. It has over 2,000 traditional houses constructed only in mud and bricks on hillocks (toguere) as protection from seasonal floods.
The biggest attraction in the city is the Great Mosque of Djenne. Built in 1907, it is the largest mud-brick building in the world. The mosque has three huge turrets with wooden poles sticking out, making it look like a huge sand castle. Every year in spring, repair and maintenance work is carried out on the mosque. This is a community affair and is undertaken with much festivity.
The Grand Marche (market) is held every Monday near the mosque. This is one of West Africa's most colorful markets with thousands of traders coming here from all over the region.
Other places worth visiting around Djenne are the Tomb of Tupama Djenepo and the ruins of Jenné-Jeno, a historical city between the 3rd-13th centuries BC.
