Niono is located in the Segou region of Mali and can be easily accessed through waterways. Reaching the town by road might be a little more challenging as transportation is hard to find. It lies on the way to Timbuktu from Segou.
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Niono was a critical juncture in the camel-borne trans-Saharan trade in salt and gold, which generated enormous wealth for Mali. Even today, Niono is a key centre for rice production, aided by the annual inundation by the Niger.
With a population of around 20,000, the economy of the town is largely supported by rice cultivation. Also, the strategic location of the town along the northern rim of the Niger River Basin has provided it with significant benefits.
