Soak in Timbuktu’s old world charm in the town’s many narrow streets and alleys dotted with traditional mud-brick architecture. Don’t miss out on the distinctive sights like the communal bread ovens.
Timbuktu is home to early Islamic learning and heritage. You’ll find rare Islamic manuscripts, preserved at the three great mosques here: the 15th century Quranic Sankore University and Mosque, the pyramid shaped Djinguereber Mosque, which was built in 1327 and the Sidi Yahya Mosque, built in 1441 by Mohamed Naddah.
Homes of former European explorers, who reached Timbuktu successfully, a city of great mystic in the olden world, exist even today.
An ethnographic museum here exhibits various antique artefacts and a collection of colonial era black and white photographs. Here, you’ll also find the Well of Bouctou, from which the city derives its name.
For the souvenir hunters, there is a local market and an artisans’ establishment.
Also visit the Flame of Peace, a monument commemorating the end of the Tuareg uprising in the mid 1990s.
