Chinguetti is an ancient trading centre situated in northern Mauritania. It is located on the Adrar Plateau and lies towards the east of Atar. With a population of around 5,000 inhabitants, Chinguetti is considered as the seventh holy city of Islam and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city is characterised by a tropical climate. Summers are extremely hot, with temperatures rising to 45°C during the day. October to March is an ideal time to visit.
Chinguetti is an ancient city which has been inhabited for thousands of years. It was developed as a fortified centre of several trans-Saharan trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean regions with Africa. Gradually, the place evolved as a focal point of Islamic culture. Its streets still reflect the amazing confluence of urban and religious architecture.
